Making Fitness a Priority when Kids Go Back to School

Did you enjoy Deschutes River floats, concerts, and slow summer days? Unfortunately, it’s that time of year when kids go back to school and you go back to rigorous routines. Although it’s great to get the kids out of the house and back into the classroom, it’s also the time for schedule overload and countless after-school activities– which leads to added pressure and stress in our already busy lives.

As parents, we have little ones that look up to us. Being present for them is essential, and we should strive to be the best version of ourselves so we can be the best for them. Exercise and physical activity are some of the best ways that you can take care of yourself so you can show up for your family each day. According to an article in Harvard Health Publishing, “Exercise reduces levels of the body’s stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. It also stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that are the body’s natural painkillers and mood elevators. Endorphins are responsible for the “runner’s high” and for the feelings of relaxation and optimism that accompany many hard workouts”. As the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup”. Trying to deal with life’s challenges when your glass is empty runs you down physically and mentally. In addition, ignoring your own self-care also hinders your ability to help the people you love in times of need. Commit to making your own self care a priority, and follow these simple guidelines to keep you on track with your HIIT workouts throughout the new school year.

  1. Make your HIIT class a non-negotiable

It’s important to plan ahead so other “to-do” items don’t push fitness off your radar. To keep exercise a priority, pencil in your workout each week as you would any other appointment and make a commitment to protect that time. Figure out which classes work for your schedule each week and sign up on the Zen Planner app.

  1. Find an accountability partner that attends the same classes

Having a friend who’s on the same page is a great (and proven) way to reach your goals. It helps keep both parties on track. We are much less likely to skip out on a friend than we are on ourselves. It’s nice to have someone else hold you accountable.

  1. Utilize HIIT @ Home

Life happens and schedules can change. Just because you can’t make a scheduled class time in the gym, remember that your HIIT @ Home membership is included in your regular monthly membership. If you sign up for a live class ahead of time, the coach can be ready with any modification needs and can cheer you on to keep you motivated throughout your workout.

In preparation for a brand new school year, take some time to reset and make your own wellbeing, health, and fitness a priority. Let go of excuses, show up, and make the hard work EASY WORK.
