How to Select a High Quality Protein Powder

How to Select a High Quality Protein Powder

In February’s blog we referenced protein shakes as a good option for post HIIT Logic recovery. While whole foods are generally preferred, protein powders can be a great tool for convenience and in general to aid in overall daily protein intake. With so many protein powders on the market, it is difficult to know how to make the best choice and select a high quality product. Here is some general information about different protein based powders and what to take notice of when selecting a product.

Types of Protein Based Powders:

  • Whey Protein: If you’re not lactose intolerant, whey protein is one of the most popular and easily digestible options.
  • Casein Protein: Another milk-derived protein that digests more slowly than whey.
  • Plant-Based Proteins: For vegetarians and vegans, options like pea, hemp, rice, and soy protein are available.
  • Collagen Protein: Good for skin and joint health, but it’s not a complete protein source.
  1. Check the Ingredient List: The shorter the ingredient list, the better. Avoid products with excessive additives, fillers, artificial flavors, and sweeteners; be wary of protein powders with added sugars.
  2. Consider How the Protein is Processed. For example: high quality whey protein powder should be processed at lower temperatures. This means that the protein was never exposed to high heats during processing or manufacturing. High heats can destroy the bio-availability of the protein before your body even gets the chance to use it.
  3. Consider Third-Party Testing: Some protein powders are third-party tested for quality and label accuracy. Look for certifications from organizations like NSF, Informed-Choice, or USP.
  4. Check for Allergens: If you have allergies or sensitivities, make sure the product is free from common allergens like gluten, dairy, soy, and nuts.
  5. Read Reviews: Read reviews from other consumers to get an idea of the taste, mixability, and overall satisfaction with the product.
  6. Look for a Transparent Company: A reputable company should provide information about their sourcing and manufacturing processes. They should be transparent about their product’s quality.
  7. Avoid Proprietary Blends: Proprietary blends make it difficult to know the exact amounts of each ingredient. Choose products that clearly list the quantity of each component.
  8. Price Isn’t Everything: While price can be an indicator of quality, it’s not the only factor. Sometimes, expensive brands aren’t necessarily the best, and affordable options can still be high-quality.
  9. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If you have any specific dietary needs or health concerns, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian before choosing a protein powder.

Remember that what’s considered “high-quality” may vary depending on your individual needs and dietary restrictions. It’s essential to choose a protein powder that aligns with your health and fitness goals, dietary preferences, and any specific sensitivities or allergies you may have.
